Tropical Rock Lobster fishery independent population survey

On 4 October 2022, the PZJA agreed to grant a permit for scientific purposes to CSIRO to undertake an annual Tropical Rock Lobster fishery independent population survey (commonly referred to as ‘the pre-season survey’) which is scheduled to take place from 8–22 November 2022 across the region. The survey team are always keen to engage with communities directly so please feel free to approach the survey vessel ‘Wild Blue’ if you see them out and about. This survey is part of the three-year funded research project, supported by the Torres Strait Scientific Advisory Committee (TSSAC) and the data collected from the annual survey is a key input used in the fishery Total Allowable Catch calculations.
